Workshop! Chant as Early Music: Toward a Nuanced Performance of Gregorian Chant
February 22, 2025 – 2 p.m.
First Congregational Church, Kalamazoo
In this workshop, we will explore some of the oldest manuscripts containing chant notation and use them to inform a highly nuanced performance of this remarkable music. There is a unique thrill that accompanies looking at a 1200-year-old manuscript and translating it into sound. And this won’t be a purely academic exercise—we will sing the results of our explorations together!
June 2025
Douce Dame Jolie: Christine de Pizan and Guillaume de Machaut in Dialogue
June 1, 2025 – 3 p.m.
First Congregational Church, Kalamazoo
Although women were certainly involved in all aspects of music-making throughout history, in some periods, such as the Middle Ages, there are few surviving pieces that we know were written by women. For this performance, we will present poetry by proto-feminist Christine de Pizan in dialogue with motets and chansons by the most important composer of the French Ars Nova, Guillaume de Machaut.
