Douce Dame Jolie: Christine de Pizan and Guillaume de Machaut in Dialogue

June 1, 2025 – 3 p.m.
First Congregational Church, Kalamazoo

Although women were certainly involved in all aspects of music-making throughout history, in some periods, such as the Middle Ages, there are few surviving pieces that we know were written by women. For this performance, we will present sacred and secular music, including the Messe de Nostre Dame, by the most important composer of the French Ars Nova, Guillaume de Machaut, in dialogue with writing by proto-feminist Christine de Pizan.

Looking Bach – J. S. Bach and the Music of PalestrinaEarly Music Michigan celebrates our twenty-fifth season and the five hundredth anniversary of the birth of Giovanni Pierluigi Palestrina by juxtaposing motets and madrigals of Palestrina with the motets of Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach famously studied the works of Palestrina as the basis for some of his own compositions, despite their antiquity.
